Bart here. We had just finished a long day in the Flint Hills on adventure motorcycles at the Flint Hills Stampede. After the rocks, mud, and challenging water crossings, we were ready to get off the bikes. One of our route leaders, Nate Lowery, brought out a bottle of Dodgy Fox Bourbon from his Speedtrap Distillery.

Turns out, he is the newest distiller in Kansas with Speedtrap Distillery in El Dorado, Kansas. His bourbon is sourced since they are too new to have a properly aged bourbon of their own yet. This single barrel bourbon is aged 6 years. It is surprisingly very smooth, with wonderful notes of vanilla, butter brickle, and butterscotch. It was just what we needed after a hard day in the saddle. Just perfect, neat in the glass! A large ice cube would certainly work as well. He let us know they were the newest distillery in Kansas with big aspirations.

As it turned out, he was also at Decant ICT at the Marriot the next day where I also had tickets.

We met again there where I was able to sample all of Speedtrap Distillery’s options. They currently are focusing on rums, producing Prairie Rum and Rum Runner 135, both with a clean, crystal clear sweetness. The Rum Runner 135 (135 Proof) is coupled with a soft, deep warming sensation.

Both rums are very nice indeed. They also offer flavored rums to include Caramel Rum, Orange Cream Rum, Coconut Cream Rum, and a Barn Burner (Cinnamon Rum). These will very quickly become welcome additions to many common cocktails.  To round out his offerings, he also produces a Moonshine.

Speedtrap Distillery is open Thursday and Friday 3-7 and Saturday 12 noon to 6 PM.

"Speedtrap Distillery is a small batch distillery focusing on quality over quantity. Growing from the ground up is expensive. Keeping that in mind, we are focused on our product over appearance. Once you try our spirits, you will agree, it’s whats in the bottle that matters! “ Give this place a try—you will certainly be very pleasantly surprised. His Dodgy Fox Single Barrel Bourbon by itself is well worth the short drive to El Dorado, Kansas (and it does happen to be National Bourbon Week June 9-15).  After the bourbon, you can get lost in the beautiful rums he is currently producing! Go see Nate and you will not be disappointed!
